The new QUANT e-Sportlimousine is the first prototype built around the groundbreaking nanoFLOWCELL® powertrain and energy-storage concept. It marks a quantum leap in the development of electric mobility. Optically, the QUANT e-Sportlimousine stands out thanks to the elegant lines of its state-of-the-art design.
The QUANT e-Sportlimousine’s two unusually wide gull-wing doors, inspired by eagle wings, cover the complete front and rear seating areas and the car does without a b-pillar altogether. The side window lowers into the gull-wing door faster at the front than at the rear. The extremely curved rear windscreen and the unusually curved front windscreen with its raked a-pillar, combine with the short front bonnet to make for impressive optics. The new paint colour, “chrystal lake blue” developed exclusively for this vehicle, reflects the character of the powertrain. The blue represents water; copper highlights, the flowing of electricity.
The flowing, sensual design of the exterior wins you over with its long, harmonious lines and attention to detail. Despite its impressive length of more than 5.25 metres and a width of more than 2.2 metres and a height of 1.35 metres, the QUANT e-Sportlimousine makes a very sporty impression. Its 22-inch tyres also highlight the car’s sporting character.
The heart of the QUANT e-Sportlimousine prototype is the nanoFLOWCELL® battery. It gives the car a driving range of 600 kilometres. The newest product moving the world towards attractive electrical mobility was conceived at the nanoFLOWCELL DigiLab simulation lab at nanoFLOWCELL AG in Zurich, Switzerland. It is still under active development and the results so far are extremely promising.
TIRELESS ENERGY SOURCE
The nanoFLOWCELL® functions as a tireless source of energy for the central storage unit as long as sufficient electrolytic fluid is present in the tanks. Once the reserve is used up, both tank contents need to be replaced. The prototype features a double tank system with dual filler necks, making this process is no more complicated than filling up a conventionally powered vehicle today.
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TRAVEL
The nanoFLOWCELL® is extremely environmentally friendly. It uses neither precious metals nor rare earths. The cell comprises mostly water as a carrier substance, metallic salts, and crystalline structures. All of these components can be combined, used, and disposed of with no damage to the environment.
A QUANTUM LEAP
Process engineers call the chemical activity inside the nanoFLOWCELL® “cold combustion”, though the internal operating temperatures can range from 60° to 160° Celsius depending on output. This low operating temperature range also contributes to the system’s excellent internal efficiency of more than 80%.

The QUANT e-Sportlimousine has an Android-based infotainment system. It provides driver and passengers with a wealth of functions in widescreen cinema style on its 1.25 metre wide front display. It shows important information like charge status, current state of the flow cell, driving range, as well as all other driving data. Another distinctive feature of the new QUANT e-Sportlimousine are its wooden sensorFLOW® operating controls. This new technology adds a visual highlight to every journey.
The QUANTmobile App allows the driver to control the QUANT e-Sportlimousine’s settings and functions via smartphone from outside the vehicle and access its driving statistics at any time. It also supports the driver whilst driving. The smartphone is integrated into the vehicle’s central console and becomes the touchpad that controls the entire infotainment system. The QUANTmobile App will be available for iOS and Android operating systems.
The QUANT e-Sportlimousine features the revolutionary nanoFLOWCELL® energy storage technology – a further development of tried and tested redox flow-cell systems. The nanoFLOWCELL® sets itself apart from other systems in its ability to store and release electrical energy at very high energy densities. The very compact and powerful nanoFLOWCELL® battery system in the QUANT e-Sportlimousine prototype can power it for a driving range of up to 600 kilometres.
The flow cell battery is a beacon of hope because it is an especially simple and effective storage medium for electrical energy. Flow cells are chemical batteries that combine aspects of an electrochemical accumulator cell with those of a fuel cell. Liquid electrolytes circulate through two separate cells in which a “cold burning” takes place, during which oxidation and reduction processes happen in parallel and thereby produce electrical power for the drive train.
The flow cell battery’s greatest advantage lies in its range: It can drive a vehicle 20-times further than a conventional lead-acid battery and 5-times further than the lithium-ion technology that powers most of today’s electric cars. Flow cell batteries are also durable. Furthermore, recharging them does not take hours and hours. All that is required to recharge them is to exchange spent electrolytes (which can be recharged outside the vehicle) for new, charged fluid.
The high efficiency and environmental sustainability of the nanoFLOWCELL® opens new horizons in many areas. For example, the aerospace industry is searching for alternative on-board battery technologies. The rail transport industry is in search of new ways to save energy. Flow cells are already in domestic use; the nanoFLOWCELL® could cover the energy needs for individual houses and even whole towns.
Until now, the laws of physics have closed the door on any efforts to create a simple storage method for electricity. Electricity cannot be stored, only converted to other forms of energy. The flow cell is the first technology that can efficiently store significant quantities of energy. The electrolytic energy storage medium does not degrade and suffers no wear and tear. The nanoFLOWCELL® has a 5-times greater energy density than previous flow cell technologies. It is also extremely stable, safe to operate, and environmentally friendly.

Nunzio La Vecchia is the team leader and director of development. He was born in Brugg Switzerland in 1965. The physicist and autodidact acquired his academic knowledge in four years of self-study. Today, he owns several companies, runs his own research facility, the nanoFLOWCELL DigiLab in Zurich, and has more than 60 patents in solar energy, plasma energy, digital technology and electronics. He wants his work to take electric mobility to new heights. Alongside the technical challenges, he is driven by the desire to combine ecology and sustainability into real-world solutions.
The nanoFLOWCELL AG has partnered with Bosch Engineering, a 100% subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH. Their first project is the further development of the vehicle electronics for the QUANT e-Sportlimousine. The goal of the cooperation is to use the first nanoFLOWCELL® powered prototype to create a series production vehicle usable anywhere in the world. Bosch Engineering headquarters is located within the Bosch development centre in Abstatt, near Stuttgart, Germany. The respected system development partner’s more than 1850 employees worldwide – with 1600 of them in Germany – is hard at work on individual solutions for tomorrow’s mobility.
