QUANTiNO 48VOLT

350,000 test kilometres in the QUANTiNO 48VOLT

Read time: 0 min

Are you seeking proof that a flow-cell system is a viable energy source for electric vehicles? The QUANTiNO 48VOLT has more than 350,000 reasons. That is the number of kilometres the nanoFlowcell® test vehicle has accumulated to date.

Every single kilometre driven attests to the technical robustness of the 48-volt low-voltage electric drive based on flow cell technology. Moreover, the QUANTiNO 48VOLT powered by nanoFlowcell® distinguishes itself from conventional electric vehicles with lithium-ion batteries or fuel cells in terms of performance, safety, environmental compatibility, and maintenance simplicity.

The QUANTiNO 48VOLT has undergone real-world endurance testing since its road homologation in 2016, covering over 200,000 km on public roads and 150,000 km on a test bench. Over the total distance, consumable parts such as brakes and tyres were replaced regularly, and a variety of minor repairs undertaken. Nevertheless — despite being a prototype subject to a rigorous test protocol — its powertrain operated without any issues during the entire test period.

The flow cell installed in the vehicle did not trigger a single error alert. Even after more than 10,000 hours of operation, neither the membrane nor the two electric pumps showed wear. The nanoFlowcell® system functioned with virtually no maintenance. Occasional updates to the intelligent control software managing energy in the QUANTiNO 48VOLT were applied, but exclusively to optimise efficiency.

One outcome of those updates, for example, is improved regulation of bi-ION® electrolyte consumption. Over the duration of the test, the QUANTiNO 48VOLT exhibited an average consumption of just 8 to 10 kWh per 100 km.

The endurance test underscores the advantages of nanoFlowcell® technology for electric mobility. A feature particularly highlighted by the QUANTiNO 48VOLT is that the entire nanoFlowcell® system operates at low voltage, thereby eliminating the need for heavy and expensive high-voltage components common in conventional electric vehicles.

At a production cost of around 600 Euros, the nanoFlowcell® is not only much cheaper to manufacture at scale but also demands virtually no maintenance. This yields a significant reduction in inspection and maintenance costs. Furthermore, nanoFlowcell Holdings guarantees an operational life of at least 50,000 hours — well beyond the average lifespan of a vehicle.

“Endurance testing of the QUANTiNO 48VOLT has confirmed our assumptions. The real-world operation of the nanoFlowcell® was almost entirely consistent with our predictions,” states Nunzio La Vecchia, inventor of the nanoFlowcell® technology and CEO of nanoFlowcell Holdings plc. “The test demonstrates that the nanoFlowcell® 48VOLT low-voltage drive in the QUANTiNO 48VOLT represents the best performing, most efficient, and ecologically and economically most innovative energy and drive system ever installed in a road-legal electric vehicle.”

nanoFlowcell Holdings is currently intensively working on solutions for series production of the nanoFlowcell® membrane and on scaling the mass production of bi-ION® electrolyte. The company plans to provide a progress update on these projects during the current year.
